A Music One

The Yanks get a fair bit of stick from the Rest of the Worlders. Whether it's for smashing up Iraq, tinkering in South America, spreading a globalised and homogeneous culture or being flag-waving conservative religeous nut jobs, they all seem to get tarred with the same brush. By me. It's just that it's so easy to stereotype people. "Brits all wear bolar hats and sip tea", "Aussies wear vests and play table tennis", "Argentinians enjoy eating cheese and socialising with friends", they're all the images that come to our minds when we think of those nationalities.

Back to America, not all of their people fit the stereotype. Of course, even if you believe they do, there are some facts that nobody can deny. For example, they have brilliant television. Sopranos, West Wing, Desperate Housewifes, Simpsons, Futurama, the list is endless. On this side of the pond even the most anti-American person will settle down in front of the TV to laugh at the antics of Frasier Crane.

Another great thing they have, which I've discovered recently, is music. After getting bored of the same old playlists on Xfm, I decided to have a listen to the online station K Rock 2 (based in New York).

Blown away.

They play so many great bands on there that never seem to get much air time here. Some I know, some were new to me, but here's a list of what has been floating my boat:

Youth Group Australian band

Mars Volta Ok, they're famous, but former ATD-I guys should get played here more. Links to the video for the awesome L'Via L'Viaquez

Say Anything LA outfit, the song Alive With The Glory Of Love is great.

Ataris They have a big following here, quite like Not Capable Of Love (probably because I'm not)

Plain White T's Nice acousticy band.

The Academy Is We've Got A Big Mess is a cool track, reminds me of another song but can't remember which. It's bugging me.

Regina Spektor Nice lady, sounds a bit like Amos.

The Shins The more I hear the more I like. Phantom Limb = quality.

Modest Mouse They got a fair bit of airplay here when they released Float On, but I'm not sure if they have for Dashboard.

Sparta Taking Back Control is awesome.

Strata Hmmm.. sounds like Sparta. Anyway, the song Cocaine has been played on my PC a LOT recently.

Cold War Kids Saw them last year, HAVE TO BUY THE ALBUM. They are brilliant.

The Faint I like Agenda Suicide. They're from Nebraska

Cursive Their stuff is a bit all a bit of a mess, I like that. Them too are from Nebraska. Unfortunately the song Dorothy At Forty isn't on the myspace.

Nightmare Of You A bit cheesy, but they're ok.

She Wants Revenge Interpol wannabes, but they're good.

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus Face Down is banging, reminds me a bit of Archie And The Instincts. I think it's about wife beating.

The Hold Steady Chips Ahoy!

Sugarcult Good stuff.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Great band, The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth is achingly good.

The Sounds Swedish band. Painted By Numbers is great song, have to get the album if only for the cover.

Silversun Pickups Absolutely LOVE the song Lazy Eye.

Hawthorne Heights Eeeeeeeee I like this this lot. Another album to get, particularly like Pens And Needles.

Band Of Horses Crap name, but Funeral is a quality track.

AFI Fairly well known over here, I really like Love Like Winter.

That is a whole lot of music there, but if you end up liking just one band on the list then I'd consider it job done. Two bands would be better though.

-----

My little piece of the internet doesn't have it's own theme tune like all of those crappy Myspace pages that people have, but if it did, then this one would be a contender:

Sassified!

That's a whole lot of strokin' goin' on there!

I've liked Regina Spektor for a while now, just based on one song that was used on an ad a while back!

Yeah, a LOT of strokin'. I can't promise I'll not use the phrase "I be strokin'!" everyday for the rest of my life when completely inappropriate.

Don't think I saw the Regina advert..

It was ages back - for Sky, I think. Some dude was pegging it down a massive half-pipe on a skateboard. Or was it a BMX? I forget, but Regina was playing over the top.

I do like American TV. Over here, the "in" thing is to dump on America but like their TV, and love on Canada but dump on our TV shows. But not our music.

It's all so complicated.

Do Australians really play that much table tennis?

RE: table tennis - meh, probably..

As for the 'in' thing, I'm pretty sure it's the same here. Everyone dumps on the States but thinks their tv is great.

Actually, that reminds me, did anyone (UK side) see the Louis Theroux documentary with The Most Hated Family In America?

It's been uploaded to youtube, and can be seen here

Thems crazy!

Dinah: Skillz may or may not have been referring to Aussie Rules football that is often described as 'aerial ping pong'.

Something about the spelling of aerial looks wrong. Airial? Anyway, I mean things in the air, not the thing on your car that picks up the radio station.

I wasn't referring to that, but I am now!

I didn't see the Theroux documentary, but a mate told me about it. Well, she tried, but was so angry about it that she had to go and make a cup of tea to calm down.

Yeah, I got really angry watching it and wanted to ask them about 5 questions that would completely destroy their belief system.

Then I realised that they don't understand what logic is, and the anger turned into laughter.
