Poetry Club

Bit of a slow week really. Work was quite stressful, I'm increasingly feeling more and more like the servant from The Last Emperor who was forced to drink a bowl of ink by that little puke in charge. The emperor, I think.

Though on the plus side, my Amazon Wish List is now three items lighter! I've purchased
Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond (I've loved all his other stuff and can't wait to get stuck into this), The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins (can't decide if I want to read God Delusion just yet). The last item is The Man's Book by Thomas Fink. I just saw this randomly and thought it sounded good; a bit like a more serious version of Alphabet of Manliness. Just had a quick flick through and it provides great advice for making cocktails, being chivalrous, playing darts and rating women!

To quote:

"... From this we can deduce two things: the extent of Helen's beauty and its effect. The population of earth in the 12th century BC is estimated to be at most 100 million, making her the most beautiful of 50 million women. If Helen's beauty launched a thousand ships, we may infer that the most beautiful of 50 thousand women would launch a single ship. The military vessels of the time were simple galleys powered by 25 oars on each side, 50 oarsmen in all. Accordingly, the pick of a thousand women would bring a single oarsman to risk his in war. Let such a beauty be the colloquial 'perfect 10' on a scale of to 10. We call single point on this scale a Helena (HA)"

It then introduces logarithms, and says the best of a dozen women notches 3.6Ha, wheras the most beautiful woman that's ever lived is 34.2Ha. Can't wait to get into this book properly!

The latest Chufty:

"Are dogs and cats both mammals? Or is it dogs are mammals and cats are felines?"

I saw the video to Last Resort by Papa Roach the other day. I can't BELIEVE I used to think that was a good song! My toes curled listening to those lyrics...

How old is that guy??

There's only one antidote for tripe like that:

Come on, I know your parents hate you and Marilyn Manson is angry, but it's a good song! And EVERYONE seems to own the best of album.

Things with Ana are going well. We went to a poetry cafe this week and chilled out in the basement. It was empty at the time, but she explained how it's often packed, and that the poets get a bit violent sometimes when they heckle each other. Apparently chairs have been known to fly and fists are regularly thrown. We'll go again when there's a session going on, but if you're a newbie then you have to get up onstage and recite one of your poems. I thought this seemed a bit like the arty-farty club in She's All That, but wait...

Basement?

Punching?

Newbies have to participate?

It's totally like Fight Club!!!

On a similar note to The Man's Book, I got given The Superman Handbook for Christmas; basically it tells you how to do Superman-like activities, such as give Lois the heimlich maneuvre without crushing her chest, etc.

I've not started reading it yet, but am looking forward to learning how to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

I don't understand the whole 'leaping in a single bound'. I mean, he can fly! He can leap all buildings and not come down if he wanted to.

*NERD ALERT!*
Originally he was only able to jump long distances, but then they realised that jumping was actually a really stupid super-power, and gave him the power of flight instead.

I think he was jumpy man for about a year or so...
*END NERD ALERT!*

The best superpower is the one X Ray Cat has; the ability to see through any material as long as it's wood.

Let me know how you get on with the selfish gene, been tempted to read that a few times.

Oh, and if I haven't already told you to read 'the game' by Neil Strauss, read 'the game' by Neil Strauss, number one on my books of last year :)

Just had a look at the synopsis on Amazon, it looks corny but also intriguing. Undecided whether to add it to the Wish List.

Play on, playa!

Ah, go on. Go on, go on, go on. Go on, go on go on go....

It's interesting from many different view points, it's a nice easy diary style read, rather than a really annoying 'self help book' it could have been.
