Top Ten 2005

As the year winds down to it's end, here's a list of the songs that have lit my ring these past 12 munfs:

10. The Subways - Oh Yeah
Great single from a great band. Raw and rasping vocals with sing-a-long-a-bility, not entirely disimilar from The White Stripes.

9. System of a Down - B.Y.O.B
I'm not a massive fan of theirs, but this fantastically structured anti-war song stood out for me. It grabs you by the nuts and jerks you around in loads of directions, all good!

8. Soulwax - NY Excuse
I hadn't heard any of their stuff for ages, then up pops this little gem on the radio. A simple electronic tune that wouldn't feel out of place as the music on a C64 video game.

7. Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To
First heard it at V and was well impressed. A favourite on the dancefloor at O'Neils.

6. Head Automatica - Beating Heart Baby
Daryl Palumbo MAKES this song. His emotional screechings mix beautifully with the backing vocals. Top top top record.

5. Clor - Love + Pain
I absolutely adore this song! The lyrics are great, and the puddle stomping beats are a lovely touch. Must look up more of their stuff.

4. The Go! Team - Bottle Rocket
At first listen it sounds like a bit of a cacophony, but the cheerleader pop funk outfit deserve repeat listenings. This tune is a real 'feel good' tune, aided by a cheesy harmonica and schoolyard style vocals on the middle 8.

3. Foo Fighters - Best of You
I was blown away when I first heard this on the radio. Dave Grohl's driving vocals really lift this song, and are balanced perfectly with the guitars. I'm so glad I got a chance to hear this bittersweet anthem live the other day!

2. The Arcade Fire - Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out)
I really couldn't decide whether I should put in Power Out or Rebellion at number 2, but ended up opting for the former. It's hard to describe; industrial, eerie, maybe even Christmassy! There's so much variety, and the production is absolutely spot-on.

1. 'A' - Rush Song
Was there ever any doubt? I love this song to pieces. It makes my heart race. You have to hold your breath when you listen to it. Jason Perry's trademark vocals, killer riff, monster drumming, I could go on forever. The middle 8 gives you a chance to stop and throw a cup of water over yourself and get your breath back before winding back up again. I still remember hearing it on Zane Lowe's show in March ("the hottest record today, up it goes!") and hearing live during the legendary Metro shows. Quite QUITE possibly the best 'A' song of all time.

Specials mentions...
Songs not in the top 10 which I loved: Bloc Party - Two More Years, Lethal Bizzle - Fire, Do Me Bad Things - Move In Stereo, Blood Brothers - Love Rhymes With A Hideous Car Wreck, Goldfrapp - Number One, Maximo Park - Gone Missing, LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk Is Playing At My House
