V 2005

Gareth, Ga, Andrew and myself went to the V Festival this weekend which was fantastic. We arrived on Friday evening in the pouring rain, waded through a mile of ankle-deep muddy lava and realised that we were several hours too late to get a decent spot to pitch our tents. After carrying around our gear for ages we did finally did find a place to build our lodgings and were soon cracking open cans of Pringles and beer. Our neighbours were a bunch of loudmouth mockneys who seemed to think that being funny is all about how loud you say your sentences. Needless to say it was pretty difficult to get sleep when all you could hear at 4am was the Kasabian album on loop and:

MOCKNEY #1: "I NEED TO GO FOR A PISS!!!"
OTHER MOCKNEYS: "Hur hur hur hur"

Oscar Wilde would be proud.

The next morning we dined on a breakfast of lager and very warm Tesco sandwiches, purchased on the journey up. Around midday we went to see the bands- The Stands, Goldie Lookin' Chain, The Zutons, Jet, The Magic Numbers, The Bravery and The Kaiser Chiefs.

We spotted a few famous faces around us, like Lee from The Office and Moff from Human Traffic, but none can beat who we had standing RIGHT in front of us during the Kaisers- a certain Mr Colfer from our first year halls!

To the other side of me was the most attractive girl I'd set my eyes on the whole weekend, and no sooner had I pointed her out to Ga did her Australian boyfriend turn up and start chatting to me. He started by one-nilling me about who were up next -there was a massive banner which said Kaiser Chiefs but I still answered- schoolboy error. There was definitely something wrong with him, if I had a girlfriend like his I wouldn't start chatting to random choppers (like myself) about Queens of the Stoneage and the genius of Joe Strummer. I'd be waving a mace around to make sure nobody violated the airspace around such a lovely girl. She had really cool glasses too.

Oasis did a fantastic set in the evening, and the whole place was completed packed. After we left we managed to catch the end of the Chemical Brother's set, it was such a shame the two had to clash.

On Sunday we again had more of our Tesco breakfast (note: instructions about Use By and refridgeration have no meaning in a muddy field) and we saw the other acts. Cue Idlewild and Ordinary Boys both playing great sets. I split from the others to see Goldfrapp at the JJB tent and she was monumental. The sounds was immense in the closed area and Alison had so much stage presence for a little woman. She played the theremin on one song, waving her hand around the stick to produce different sounds. She then switched to producing notes by waving the instrument around her lady-bits which left the crowd (by which I mean myself) in awe.

Franz Ferdinand did their thing in the evening (they started every song by saying "This one's an oldie!"), and then we saw The Prodigy after them. The crowd went mental throughout and there was a such a great atmosphere in the darkness.

A quality weekend of music, insomnia and scumming it up. And the most surprising thing was drinking nothing but beer for 3 days and still managing to avoid visiting the portaloos.

Actually that's a lie, the most surprising thing was still seeing the Colfer there.

UPDATE (19/09/05)
Here's a video Garry took of a random bloke. He took 43 E's and then starting going a bit mental. Opens with Quicktime.
